Remove `sp_runtime::RuntimeString` and replace with `Cow<'static, str>` or `String` depending on use case (#5693) # Description As described in https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/4001 `RuntimeVersion` was not encoded consistently using serde. Turned out it was a remnant of old times and no longer actually needed. As such I removed it completely in this PR and replaced with `Cow<'static, str>` for spec/impl names and `String` for error cases. Fixes https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/4001. ## Integration For downstream projects the upgrade will primarily consist of following two changes: ```diff #[sp_version::runtime_version] pub const VERSION: RuntimeVersion = RuntimeVersion { - spec_name: create_runtime_str!("statemine"), - impl_name: create_runtime_str!("statemine"), + spec_name: alloc::borrow::Cow::Borrowed("statemine"), + impl_name: alloc::borrow::Cow::Borrowed("statemine"), ``` ```diff fn dispatch_benchmark( config: frame_benchmarking::BenchmarkConfig - ) -> Result<Vec<frame_benchmarking::BenchmarkBatch>, sp_runtime::RuntimeString> { + ) -> Result<Vec<frame_benchmarking::BenchmarkBatch>, alloc::string::String> { ``` SCALE encoding/decoding remains the same as before, but serde encoding in runtime has changed from bytes to string (it was like this in `std` environment already), which most projects shouldn't have issues with. I consider the impact of serde encoding here low due to the type only being used in runtime version struct and mostly limited to runtime internals, where serde encoding/decoding of this data structure is quite unlikely (though we did hit exactly this edge-case ourselves
). ## Review Notes Most of the changes are trivial and mechanical, the only non-trivial change is in `substrate/primitives/version/proc-macro/src/decl_runtime_version.rs` where macro call expectation in `sp_version::runtime_version` implementation was replaced with function call expectation. # Checklist * [x] My PR includes a detailed description as outlined in the "Description" and its two subsections above. * [ ] My PR follows the [labeling requirements]( https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/master/docs/contributor/CONTRIBUTING.md#Process ) of this project (at minimum one label for `T` required) * External contributors: ask maintainers to put the right label on your PR. * [ ] I have made corresponding changes to the documentation (if applicable) --------- Co-authored-by:GitHub Action <action@github.com> Co-authored-by:

# Description Closes #5940 ## Integration Node devs that rely on templates' nodes binaries for minimal or parachain would need to follow the updated templates' README.mds again to find how to build the nodes' binaries. ## Review Notes Conditional compilation of virtual workspaces would compile the `members` list as if we passed `--workspace` flag to `cargo build` , except when adding a `default-members` list which will be used for any cargo command executed in the virtual workspace root. To build the full members list needs passing `--workspace` flag. Other options investigated: - feature guard the `node` crate by defining a feature in the `node` crate, but it feels too complex since all code needs to be feature guarded. I haven't tried it but technically speaking it might work. I think though it looks awkward and my opinion is that the alternative is better. - defining features in the virtual workspace's Cargo.toml doesn't work (thought that I mig...

When using with `polkadot-parachain`, you usually need to specify the `relay_chain` and `para_id` fields in the chain spec. With this PR it can be achieved by specifying newly added `--para-id` and `--relay-chain` command line args, e.g: ``` chain-spec-builder create -r _runtime.wasm --para-id 100 --relay-chain xxx default ``` This was implemented by simple _json_ blobs merging. Additionally unit tests covering basic functionality were added. Also adds a fix for not overwriting the chain spec with the default config each time, swallowing not standard fields is also fixed. While working on https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/4600 I found that it would be nice if `chain-spec-builder` supported `codeSubstitutes`. After this PR is merged you can do: ``` chain-spec-builder add-code-substitute chain_spec.json my_runtime.compact.compressed.wasm 1234 ``` In addition, the `chain-spec-builder` was silently removing `relay_chain` and `para_id` fields when used on parachain chain-specs. This is now fixed by providing a custom chain-spec extension that has these fields marked as optional.

The runtime now can provide a number of predefined presets of `RuntimeGenesisConfig` struct. This presets are intended to be used in different deployments, e.g.: `local`, `staging`, etc, and should be included into the corresponding chain-specs. Having `GenesisConfig` presets in runtime allows to fully decouple node from runtime types (the problem is described in #1984). **Summary of changes:** - The `GenesisBuilder` API was adjusted to enable this functionality (and provide better naming - #150): ```rust fn preset_names() -> Vec<PresetId>; fn get_preset(id: Option<PresetId>) -> Option<serde_json::Value>; //`None` means default fn build_state(value: serde_json::Value); pub struct PresetId(Vec<u8>); ``` - **Breaking change**: Old `create_default_config` method was removed, `build_config` was renamed to `build_state`. As a consequence a node won't be able to interact with genesis config for older runtimes. The cleanup was made for sake of API ...

Genesis building in runtime may involve calling some custom host functions. This PR allows to pass `HostFunctions` into the `ChainSpec` struct, which in turn are passed to `WasmExecutor`. The `ChainSpec` now has extended host functions type parameter: ``` pub struct ChainSpec<G, E = NoExtension, EHF = ()> ``` which will be combined with the default set (`sp_io::SubstrateHostFunctions`) in an instance of `WasmExecutor` used to build the genesis config. This PR prepares chains specs for _native-runtime-free_ world. This PR has following changes: - `substrate`: - adds support for: - JSON based `GenesisConfig` to `ChainSpec` allowing interaction with runtime `GenesisBuilder` API. - interacting with arbitrary runtime wasm blob to[ `chain-spec-builder`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/3ef576eaeb3f42610e85daecc464961cf1295570/bin/utils/chain-spec-builder/src/lib.rs#L46) command line util, - removes [`code`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/3ef576eaeb3f42610e85daecc464961cf1295570/frame/system/src/lib.rs#L660) from `system_pallet` - adds `code` to the `ChainSpec` - deprecates [`ChainSpec::from_genesis`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/3ef576eaeb3f42610e85daecc464961cf1295570/client/chain-spec/src/chain_spec.rs#L263), but also changes the signature of this method extending it with `code` argument. [`ChainSpec::builder()`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/20bee680ed098be7239cf7a6b804cd4de267983e/client/chain-spec/src/chain_spec.rs#L507) should be used instead. - `polkadot`: - all references to `RuntimeGenesisConfig` in `node/service` are removed, - all `(kusama|polkadot|versi|rococo|wococo)_(staging|dev)_genesis_config` functions now return the JSON patch for default runtime `GenesisConfig`, - `ChainSpecBuilder` is used, `ChainSpec::from_genesis` is removed, - `cumulus`: - `ChainSpecBuilder` is used, `ChainSpec::from_genesis` is removed, - _JSON_ patch configuration used instead of `RuntimeGenesisConfig struct` in all chain specs. --------- Co-authored-by: command-bot <> Co-authored-by:

See #1345, <https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/14207>. This adds all the necessary mixnet components, and puts them together in the "kitchen-sink" node/runtime. The components added are: - A pallet (`frame/mixnet`). This is responsible for determining the current mixnet session and phase, and the mixnodes to use in each session. It provides a function that validators can call to register a mixnode for the next session. The logic of this pallet is very similar to that of the `im-online` pallet. - A service (`client/mixnet`). This implements the core mixnet logic, building on the `mixnet` crate. The service communicates with other nodes using notifications sent over the "mixnet" protocol. - An RPC interface. This currently only supports sending transactions over the mixnet. --------- Co-authored-by:

* Add new RPC method to get the chain type This adds a new RPC method to get the chain type of the running chain. The chain type needs to be specified in the chain spec. This should make it easier for tools/UI to display extra information without needing to rely on parsing the chain name. * Update client/rpc-api/src/system/mod.rs Co-Authored-By:
