After preparing in https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/4633, we can lift also all internal dependencies up to the workspace. This does not actually change anything, but uses `workspace = true` for all dependencies. You can check it with: ```bash git checkout -q $(git merge-base oty-lift-all-deps origin/master) cargo tree -e features > master.out git checkout -q oty-lift-all-deps cargo tree -e features > new.out diff master.out new.out ``` It did not yet lift 100% of dependencies, some inside of `target.*` or some that had conflicting aliases introduced recently. But i will do these together in a follow-up with CI checks. Implements most of https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1797 Core sharing (two parachains or more marachains scheduled on the same core with the same `PartsOf57600` value) was not working correctly. The expected behaviour is to have Backed and Included event in each block for the paras sharing the core and the paras should take turns. E.g. for two cores we expect: Backed(a); Included(a)+Backed(b); Included(b)+Backed(a); etc. Instead of this each block contains just one event and there are a lot of gaps (blocks w/o events) during the session. Inherited workspace dependencies cannot be renamed by the crate using them (see [1](https://github.com/rust-lang/cargo/issues/12546), [2](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/76792343/can-inherited-dependencies-in-rust-be-aliased-in-the-cargo-toml-file)). Since we want to use inherited workspace dependencies everywhere, we first need to unify all aliases that we use for a dependency throughout the workspace. The umbrella crate is currently excluded from this procedure, since it should be able to export the crates by their original name without much hassle. For example: one crate may alias `parity-scale-codec` to `codec`, while another crate does not alias it at all. After this change, all crates have to use `codec` as name. The problematic combinations were: - conflicting aliases: most crates aliases as `A` but some use `B`. - missing alias: most of the crates alias a dep but some dont. - superfluous alias: most crates dont alias a dep but some do. The script that i used first determines whether most crates opted to alias a dependency or not. From that info it decides whether to use an alias or not. If it decided to use an alias, the most common one is used everywhere. # Umbrella Crate The Polkadot-SDK "umbrella" is a crate that re-exports all other published crates. This makes it possible to have a very small `Cargo.toml` file that only has one dependency, the umbrella crate. This helps with selecting the right combination of crate versions, since otherwise 3rd party tools are needed to select a compatible set of versions. ## Features The umbrella crate supports no-std builds and can therefore be used in the runtime and node. There are two main features: `runtime` and `node`. The `runtime` feature enables all `no-std` crates, while the `node` feature enables all `std` crates. It should be used like any other crate in the repo, with `default-features = false`. For more fine-grained control, additionally, each crate can be enabled selectively. Attempt to avoid specifying `BlockHashCount` for different `mocking::{MockBlock, MockBlockU32, MockBlockU128}` (#4543) While doing some migration/rebase I came in to the situation, where I needed to change `mocking::MockBlock` to `mocking::MockBlockU32`: ``` #[derive_impl(frame_system::config_preludes::TestDefaultConfig)] impl frame_system::Config for TestRuntime { type Block = frame_system::mocking::MockBlockU32<TestRuntime>; type AccountData = pallet_balances::AccountData<ThisChainBalance>; } ``` But actual `TestDefaultConfig` for `frame_system` is using `ConstU64` for `type BlockHashCount = frame_support::traits::ConstU64<10>;` [here](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/master/substrate/frame/system/src/lib.rs#L303). Because of this, it force me to specify and add override for `type BlockHashCount = ConstU32<10>`. # Context Estimating fees for XCM execution and sending has been an area with bad UX. The addition of the [XcmPaymentApi](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/3607) exposed the necessary components to be able to estimate XCM fees correctly, however, that was not the full story. The `XcmPaymentApi` works for estimating fees only if you know the specific XCM you want to execute or send. This is necessary but most UIs want to estimate the fees for extrinsics, they don't necessarily know the XCM program that's executed by them. # Main addition A new runtime API is introduced, the `XcmDryRunApi`, that given an extrinsic, or an XCM program, returns its effects: - Execution result - Local XCM (in the case of an extrinsic) - Forwarded XCMs - List of events This API can be used on its own for dry-running purposes, for double-checking or testing, but it mainly shines when used in conjunction with the `XcmPaymentApi`. HRMP - set `DefaultChannelSizeAndCapacityWithSystem` with dynamic values according to the `ActiveConfig` (#4332) ## Summary This PR enhances the capability to set `DefaultChannelSizeAndCapacityWithSystem` for HRMP. Currently, all testnets (Rococo, Westend) have a hard-coded value set as 'half of the maximum' determined by the live `ActiveConfig`. While this approach appears satisfactory, potential issues could arise if the live `ActiveConfig` are adjusted below these hard-coded values, necessitating a new runtime release with updated values. Additionally, hard-coded values have consequences, such as Rococo's benchmarks not functioning: https://gitlab.parity.io/parity/mirrors/polkadot-sdk/-/jobs/6082656. ## Solution The proposed solution here is to utilize `ActiveConfigHrmpChannelSizeAndCapacityRatio`, which reads the current `ActiveConfig` and calculates `DefaultChannelSizeAndCapacityWithSystem`, for example, "half of the maximum" based on live data. This way, whenever `ActiveConfig` is modified, `ActiveConfigHrmpChannelSizeAndCapacityRatio` automatically returns adjusted values with the appropriate ratio. Thus, manual adjustments and new runtime releases become unnecessary. Disabling strategy specification [here](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2955). (Updated 13/02/2024) Implements: * validator disabling for a whole era instead of just a session * no more than 1/3 of the validators in the active set are disabled Removes: * `DisableStrategy` enum - now each validator committing an offence is disabled. * New era is not forced if too many validators are disabled. Before this PR not all offenders were disabled. A decision was made based on [`enum DisableStrategy`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bbb66316/substrate/primitives/staking/src/offence.rs#L54). Some offenders were disabled for a whole era, some just for a session, some were not disabled at all. This PR changes the disabling behaviour. Now a validator committing an offense is disabled immediately till the end of the current era. Some implementation notes: * `OffendingValidators` in pallet session keeps all offenders (this is not changed). However its type is changed from `Vec<(u32, bool)>` to `Vec<u32>`. The reason is simple - each offender is getting disabled so the bool doesn't make sense anymore. * When a validator is disabled it is first added to `OffendingValidators` and then to `DisabledValidators`. This is done in [`add_offending_validator`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bbb66316/substrate/frame/staking/src/slashing.rs#L325) from staking pallet. * In [`rotate_session`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bdbe9829/substrate/frame/session/src/lib.rs#L623) the `end_session` also calls [`end_era`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bbb66316/substrate/frame/staking/src/pallet/impls.rs#L490) when an era ends. In this case `OffendingValidators` are cleared **(1)**. * Then in [`rotate_session`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bdbe9829/substrate/frame/session/src/lib.rs#L623) `DisabledValidators` are cleared **(2)** * And finally (still in `rotate_session`) a call to [`start_session`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bbb66316 /substrate/frame/staking/src/pallet/impls.rs#L430) repopulates the disabled validators **(3)**. * The reason for this complication is that session pallet knows nothing abut eras. To overcome this on each new session the disabled list is repopulated (points 2 and 3). Preparation for https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/3935 Changes: - Add some `default-features = false` for the case that a crate and that dependency both support nostd builds. - Shuffle files around of some benchmarking-only crates. These conditionally disabled the `cfg_attr` for nostd and pulled in libstd. Example [here](https://github.com/ggwpez/zepter/pull/95). The actual logic is moved into a `inner.rs` to preserve nostd capability of the crate in case the benchmarking feature is disabled. - Add some `use sp_std::vec` where needed. - Remove some `optional = true` in cases where it was not optional. - Removed one superfluous `cfg_attr(not(feature = "std"), no_std..`. This MR contains two major changes and some maintenance cleanup. ## 1. Free Standing Pallet Benchmark Runner Closes https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/3045, depends on your runtime exposing the `GenesisBuilderApi` (like https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/1492). Introduces a new binary crate: `frame-omni-bencher`. It allows to directly benchmark a WASM blob - without needing a node or chain spec. This makes it much easier to generate pallet weights and should allow us to remove bloaty code from the node. It should work for all FRAME runtimes that dont use 3rd party host calls or non `BlakeTwo256` block hashing (basically all polkadot parachains should work). It is 100% backwards compatible with the old CLI args, when the `v1` compatibility command is used. This is done to allow for forwards compatible addition of new commands. ### Example (full example in the Rust docs) Installing the CLI: ```sh cargo install --locked --path substrate/utils/frame/omni-bencher frame-omni-bencher --help ``` Building the Westend runtime: ```sh cargo build -p westend-runtime --release --features runtime-benchmarks ``` Benchmarking the runtime: ```sh frame-omni-bencher v1 benchmark pallet --runtime target/release/wbuild/westend-runtime/westend_runtime.compact.compressed.wasm --all ``` ## 2. Building the Benchmark Genesis State in the Runtime Closes https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/2664 This adds `--runtime` and `--genesis-builder=none|runtime|spec` arguments to the `benchmark pallet` command to make it possible to generate the genesis storage by the runtime. This can be used with both the node and the freestanding benchmark runners. It utilizes the new `GenesisBuilder` RA and depends on having https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/3412 deployed. ## 3. Simpler args for `PalletCmd::run` You can do three things here to integrate the changes into your node: - nothing: old code keeps working as before but emits a deprecated warning - delete: remove the pallet benchmarking code from your node and use the omni-bencher instead - patch: apply the patch below and keep using as currently. This emits a deprecated warning at runtime, since it uses the old way to generate a genesis state, but is the smallest change. ```patch runner.sync_run(|config| cmd - .run::<HashingFor<Block>, ReclaimHostFunctions>(config) + .run_with_spec::<HashingFor<Block>, ReclaimHostFunctions>(Some(config.chain_spec)) ) ``` ## 4. migrations: prevent accidentally using unversioned migrations instead of `VersionedMigration` (#3835) closes #1324 #### Problem Currently, it is possible to accidentally use inner unversioned migration instead of `VersionedMigration` since both implement `OnRuntimeUpgrade`. #### Solution With this change, we make it clear that value of `Inner` is not intended to be used directly. It is achieved by bounding `Inner` to new trait `UncheckedOnRuntimeUpgrade`, which has the same interface (except `unchecked_` prefix) as `OnRuntimeUpgrade`. #### `try-runtime` functions Since developers can implement `try-runtime` for `Inner` value in `VersionedMigration` and have custom logic for it, I added the same `try-runtime` functions to `UncheckedOnRuntimeUpgrade`. I looked for a ways to not duplicate functions, but couldn't find anything that doesn't significantly change the codebase. When using `schedule_code_upgrade` to change the code of a parachain in the relay chain runtime, we had already fixed to not set the `GoAhead` signal. This was done to not brick any parachain after the upgrade, because they were seeing the signal without having any upgrade prepared. The remaining problem is that the parachain code is only upgraded after a parachain header was enacted, aka the parachain made some progress. However, this is quite complicated if the parachain is bricked (which is the most common scenario why to manually schedule a code upgrade). Thus, this pull request replaces `SetGoAhead` with `UpgradeStrategy` to signal to the logic kind of strategy want to use. The strategies are either `SetGoAheadSignal` or `ApplyAtExpectedBlock`. `SetGoAheadSignal` sets the go ahead signal as before and awaits a parachain block. `ApplyAtExpectedBlock` schedules the upgrade and applies it directly at the `expected_block` without waitin...

This PR notifies broker pallet for any parachain slot swaps performed on the relay chain. This is achieved by registering an `OnSwap` for the the `coretime` pallet. The hook sends XCM message to the broker chain and invokes a new extrinsic `swap_leases` which updates `Leases` storage item (which keeps the legacy parachain leases). I made two assumptions in this PR: 1. [`Leases`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/4987d798/substrate/frame/broker/src/lib.rs#L120) in `broker` pallet and [`Leases`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/4987d798 /polkadot/runtime/common/src/slots/mod.rs#L118) in `slots` pallet are in sync. 2. `swap_leases` extrinsic from `broker` pallet can be triggered only by root or by the XCM message from the relay chain. If not - the extrinsic will generate an error and do nothing. As a side effect from the changes `OnSwap` trait is moved from runtime/common/traits.rs to runtime/parachains. Otherwise it is not accessible from `broker` pallet. We witnessed really poor performance on Rococo, where we ended up with 50 on-demand cores. This was due to the fact that for each core the full queue was processed. With this change full queue processing will happen way less often (most of the time complexity is O(1) or O(log(n))) and if it happens then only for one core (in expectation). Also spot price is now updated before each order to ensure economic back pressure. TODO: - [x] Implement - [x] Basic tests - [x] Add more tests (see todos) - [x] Run benchmark to confirm better performance, first results suggest > 100x faster. - [x] Write migrations - [x] Bump scale-info version and remove patch in Cargo.toml - [x] Write PR docs: on-demand performance improved, more on-demand cores are now non problematic anymore. If need by also the max queue size can be increased again. (Maybe not to 10k) Optional: Performance can be improved even more, if we called `pop_assignment_for_core()`, before calling `report_processed` (Avoid needless affinity drops).
