add details in `--dev` flag to tell that it disables local peer discovery ### Context When adding automated end-to-end tests, we replaced `--dev` by ``` `--chain=dev`, `--force-authoring`, `--rpc-cors=all`, `--alice`, and `--tmp` flags ``` as stated in the command line documentation. But the tests started failing due to the nodes connecting to each other. ### Fix This PR includes additional command line documentation to explain more in detail what `--dev` flag inludes.

Remove the `GRANDPA_AUTHORITIES_KEY` key and its usage. Apparently this was used in the early days to communicate the grandpa authorities to the node. However, we have now a runtime api that does this for us. So, this pull request is moving from the custom managed storage item to a FRAME managed storage item. This pr also includes a migration for doing the switch on a running chain. --------- Co-authored-by:

When warp syncing we import the target block with all its state. However, we didn't store the `LAST_PRUNED` block which would then lead to `pruning` to forget about the imported block after a restart of the node. We just set `LAST_PRUNED` to the parent block of the warp sync target block to fix this issue.

Genesis building in runtime may involve calling some custom host functions. This PR allows to pass `HostFunctions` into the `ChainSpec` struct, which in turn are passed to `WasmExecutor`. The `ChainSpec` now has extended host functions type parameter: ``` pub struct ChainSpec<G, E = NoExtension, EHF = ()> ``` which will be combined with the default set (`sp_io::SubstrateHostFunctions`) in an instance of `WasmExecutor` used to build the genesis config. This PR prepares chains specs for _native-runtime-free_ world. This PR has following changes: - `substrate`: - adds support for: - JSON based `GenesisConfig` to `ChainSpec` allowing interaction with runtime `GenesisBuilder` API. - interacting with arbitrary runtime wasm blob to[ `chain-spec-builder`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/3ef576eaeb3f42610e85daecc464961cf1295570/bin/utils/chain-spec-builder/src/lib.rs#L46) command line util, - removes [`code`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/3ef576eaeb3f42610e85daecc464961cf1295570/frame/system/src/lib.rs#L660) from `system_pallet` - adds `code` to the `ChainSpec` - deprecates [`ChainSpec::from_genesis`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/3ef576eaeb3f42610e85daecc464961cf1295570/client/chain-spec/src/chain_spec.rs#L263), but also changes the signature of this method extending it with `code` argument. [`ChainSpec::builder()`](https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/blob/20bee680ed098be7239cf7a6b804cd4de267983e/client/chain-spec/src/chain_spec.rs#L507) should be used instead. - `polkadot`: - all references to `RuntimeGenesisConfig` in `node/service` are removed, - all `(kusama|polkadot|versi|rococo|wococo)_(staging|dev)_genesis_config` functions now return the JSON patch for default runtime `GenesisConfig`, - `ChainSpecBuilder` is used, `ChainSpec::from_genesis` is removed, - `cumulus`: - `ChainSpecBuilder` is used, `ChainSpec::from_genesis` is removed, - _JSON_ patch configuration used instead of `RuntimeGenesisConfig struct` in all chain specs. --------- Co-authored-by: command-bot <> Co-authored-by:

The `BlockBuilderProvider` was a trait that was defined in `sc-block-builder`. The trait was implemented for `Client`. This basically meant that you needed to import `sc-block-builder` any way to have access to the block builder. So, this trait was not providing any real value. This pull request is removing the said trait. Instead of the trait it introduces a builder for creating a `BlockBuilder`. The builder currently has the quite fabulous name `BlockBuilderBuilder` (I'm open to any better name
). The rest of the pull request is about replacing the old trait with the new builder. # Downstream code changes If you used `new_block` or `new_block_at` before you now need to switch it over to the new `BlockBuilderBuilder` pattern: ```rust // `new` requires a type that implements `CallApiAt`. let mut block_builder = BlockBuilderBuilder::new(client) // Then you need to specify the hash of the parent block the block will be build on top of .on_parent_block(at) // The block builder also needs the block number of the parent block. // Here it is fetched from the given `client` using the `HeaderBackend` // However, there also exists `with_parent_block_number` for directly passing the number .fetch_parent_block_number(client) .unwrap() // Enable proof recording if required. This call is optional. .enable_proof_recording() // Pass the digests. This call is optional. .with_inherent_digests(digests) .build() .expect("Creates new block builder"); ``` --------- Co-authored-by:Sebastian Kunert <skunert49@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: command-bot <>

This PR moves syncing-related code from `sc-network-common` to `sc-network-sync`. Unfortunately, some parts are tightly integrated with networking, so they were left in `sc-network-common` for now: 1. `SyncMode` in `common/src/sync.rs` (used in `NetworkConfiguration`). 2. `BlockAnnouncesHandshake`, `BlockRequest`, `BlockResponse`, etc. in `common/src/sync/message.rs` (used in `src/protocol.rs` and `src/protocol/message.rs`). More substantial refactoring is needed to decouple syncing and networking completely, including getting rid of the hardcoded sync protocol. ## Release notes Move syncing-related code from `sc-network-common` to `sc-network-sync`. Delete `ChainSync` trait as it's never used (the only implementation is accessed directly from `SyncingEngine` and exposes a lot of public methods that are not part of the trait). Some new trait(s) for syncing will likely be introduced as part of Sync 2.0 refactoring to represent syncing strategies.

The change adds a test to show the failure scenario that caused #1812 to be rolled back (more context: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/493#issuecomment-1772009924) Summary of the scenario: 1. Node has finished downloading up to block 1000 from the peers, from the canonical chain. 2. Peers are undergoing re-org around this time. One of the peers has switched to a non-canonical chain, announces block 1001 from that chain 3. Node downloads 1001 from the peer, and tries to import which would fail (as we don't have the parent block 1000 from the other chain) --------- Co-authored-by:

### Original PR https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/14137 This PR brings in the first version of the "_`frame` umbrella crate_". This crate is intended to serve two purposes: 1. documentation 2. easier development with frame. Ideally, we want most users to be able to build a frame-based pallet and runtime using just `frame` (plus `scale-codec` and `scale-info`). The crate is not finalized and is not yet intended for external use. Therefore, the version is set to `0.0.1-dev`, this PR is `silent`, and the entire crate is hidden behind the `experimental` flag. The main intention in merging it early on is to be able to iterate on it in the rest of [`developer-hub`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk-docs/) efforts. The public API of the `frame` crate is at the moment as follows: ``` pub mod frame pub use frame::log pub use frame::pallet pub mod frame::arithmetic pub use frame::arithmetic::<<sp_arithmetic::*>> The `xcm` crate was renamed to `staging-xcm` to be able to publish it to crates.io as someone as squatted `xcm`. The problem with this rename is that the `TypeInfo` includes the crate name which ultimately lands in the metadata. The metadata is consumed by downstream users like `polkadot-js` or people building on top of `polkadot-js`. These people are using the entire `path` to find the type in the type registry. Thus, their code would break as the type path would now be [`staging_xcm`, `VersionedXcm`] instead of [`xcm`, `VersionedXcm`]. This pull request fixes this by renaming the path segment `staging_xcm` to `xcm`. This requires: https://github.com/paritytech/scale-info/pull/197 --------- Co-authored-by:

Fix situation where BEEFY initial validator set could not be determined. If state is unavailable at BEEFY genesis block to get initial validator set, get the info from header digests. For this, we need to walk back the chain starting from BEEFY genesis looking for the BEEFY digest announcing the active validator set for that respective session. This commit fixes a silly bug where walking back the chain was stopped when reaching BEEFY genesis block, which is incorrect when BEEFY genesis is not session boundary block. When BEEFY genesis is set to some random block within a session, we need to walk back to the start of the session to see the validator set announcement. Added regression test for this fix. See #1345, <https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/14207>. This adds all the necessary mixnet components, and puts them together in the "kitchen-sink" node/runtime. The components added are: - A pallet (`frame/mixnet`). This is responsible for determining the current mixnet session and phase, and the mixnodes to use in each session. It provides a function that validators can call to register a mixnode for the next session. The logic of this pallet is very similar to that of the `im-online` pallet. - A service (`client/mixnet`). This implements the core mixnet logic, building on the `mixnet` crate. The service communicates with other nodes using notifications sent over the "mixnet" protocol. - An RPC interface. This currently only supports sending transactions over the mixnet. --------- Co-authored-by:

Closes #1767 Until now the `purge-chain` command would only remove the `full` subfolder of the db folder. However there is also the `parachains` db that currently remains and can cause problems on node restart. Example wiht old code: ``` polkadot purge-chain --database paritydb --base-path /tmp/some-folder Are you sure to remove "/tmp/some-folder/chains/polkadot/paritydb/full"? [y/N]: y "/tmp/some-folder/chains/polkadot/paritydb/full" removed. ``` In this case `/tmp/some-folder/chains/polkadot/paritydb/parachains` would remain and might cause problem on node restart because of version conflicts as described in #1767. After this PR the whole `/tmp/some-folder/chains/polkadot/paritydb` folder will be deleted.

This PR adjusts the serialized format of the the returned RuntimeVersion in the rpc-spec-v2 methods. This is done to match the format defined here: https://paritytech.github.io/json-rpc-interface-spec/api/chainHead_unstable_follow.html#about-the-runtime - ##### `apis` field as object `apis` field of `RuntimeVersion` is now returned as an object, e.g. ``` "apis": { "0xdf6acb689907609b": 3, "0x37e397fc7c91f5e4": 1, } ``` instead of ``` "apis": [ ["0xdf6acb689907609b", 3], ["0x37e397fc7c91f5e4", 1], ] ``` - ##### removed `stateVersion` and `authoringVersion` `stateVersion` and `authoringVersion` are no longer returned in the `RuntimeVersion` JSON Object. - ##### block index in chain head events as integer ### Related Issues Closes: #1507 Closes: #1146 ### Testing Done Adjusted existing tests to make sure data is returned in the correct format.

This pull request is to fix the output text misalignment of `subkey inspect` command: (the `Network ID` line has an extra space at the end, and the `Secret seed` line lacks a leading space) ``` [btwiuse@railway ~]$ subkey inspect '' | cat -A Secret Key URI `` is account:$ Network ID: substrate $ Secret seed: 0xfac7959dbfe72f052e5a0c3c8d6530f202b02fd8f9f5ca3580ec8deb7797479e$ Public key (hex): 0x46ebddef8cd9bb167dc30878d7113b7e168e6f0646beffd77d69d39bad76b47a$ Account ID: 0x46ebddef8cd9bb167dc30878d7113b7e168e6f0646beffd77d69d39bad76b47a$ Public key (SS58): 5DfhGyQdFobKM8NsWvEeAKk5EQQgYe9AydgJ7rMB6E1EqRzV$ SS58 Address: 5DfhGyQdFobKM8NsWvEeAKk5EQQgYe9AydgJ7rMB6E1EqRzV$ ``` The output should be in the same YAML-like format as `subkey generate`: ``` [btwiuse@railway ~]$ subkey generate | cat -A Secret phrase: awkward eagle survey resemble novel resist modify memory pistol shed flower run$ Network ID: substrate$ Secret seed: 0x20502f79366325b7dc7620664e8844ae69d441baf6e5b571a57d3b3ff28e9586$ Public key (hex): 0x468874b9e5b6b77333fa702b9201b924d6834bf956e33e2bbe37d131134ca830$ Account ID: 0x468874b9e5b6b77333fa702b9201b924d6834bf956e33e2bbe37d131134ca830$ Public key (SS58): 5DfBkAMg5xQmsePFr3BWLZm99smiNyy9axWSgembvFgDKh9v$ SS58 Address: 5DfBkAMg5xQmsePFr3BWLZm99smiNyy9axWSgembvFgDKh9v$ ``` This change will fix `subkey` as well as all binaries that embed it as the `key` subcommand, for example: `substrate key`, `polkadot key`, etc. --------- Co-authored-by:
