      Implementation of the new validator disabling strategy (#2226) · 988e30f1
      Tsvetomir Dimitrov authored
      Closes https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1966,
      https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1963 and
      https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/1962.

      Disabling strategy specification
      [here](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2955). (Updated
      13/02/2024)

      Implements:
      * validator disabling for a whole era instead of just a session
      * no more than 1/3 of the validators in the active set are disabled
      Removes:
      * `DisableStrategy` enum - now each validator committing an offence is
      disabled.
      * New era is not forced if too many validators are disabled.

      Before this PR not all offenders were disabled. A decision was made
      based on [`enum
      DisableStrategy`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bbb66316/substrate/primitives/staking/src/offence.rs#L54).
      Some offenders were disabled for a whole era, some just for a session,
      some were not disabled at all.

      This PR changes the disabling behaviour. Now a validator committing an
      offense is disabled immediately till the end of the current era.

      Some implementation notes:
      * `OffendingValidators` in pallet session keeps all offenders (this is
      not changed). However its type is changed from `Vec<(u32, bool)>` to
      `Vec<u32>`. The reason is simple - each offender is getting disabled so
      the bool doesn't make sense anymore.
      * When a validator is disabled it is first added to
      `OffendingValidators` and then to `DisabledValidators`. This is done in
      [`add_offending_validator`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bbb66316/substrate/frame/staking/src/slashing.rs#L325)
      from staking pallet.
      * In
      [`rotate_session`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bdbe9829/substrate/frame/session/src/lib.rs#L623)
      the `end_session` also calls
      [`end_era`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bbb66316/substrate/frame/staking/src/pallet/impls.rs#L490)
      when an era ends. In this case `OffendingValidators` are cleared
      **(1)**.
      * Then in
      [`rotate_session`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bdbe9829/substrate/frame/session/src/lib.rs#L623)
      `DisabledValidators` are cleared **(2)**
      * And finally (still in `rotate_session`) a call to
      [`start_session`](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/bbb66316

      /substrate/frame/staking/src/pallet/impls.rs#L430)
      repopulates the disabled validators **(3)**.
      * The reason for this complication is that session pallet knows nothing
      abut eras. To overcome this on each new session the disabled list is
      repopulated (points 2 and 3). Staking pallet knows when a new era starts
      so with point 1 it ensures that the offenders list is cleared.

      Update benchmarking macros (#3934) · d38f6e67
      PG Herveou authored

      Current benchmarking macro returns a closure with the captured
      benchmarked code.
      This can cause issues when the benchmarked code has complex lifetime
      requirements.

      This PR updates the existing macro by injecting the recording parameter
      and invoking the start / stop method around the benchmarked block
      instead of returning a closure

      One other added benefit is that you can write this kind of code now as
      well:

      ```rust
      let v;
      #[block]
      { v = func.call(); }
      dbg!(v); // or assert something on v
      ```

      Fix kusama validators getting 0 backing rewards the first session they enter the active set (#3722) · 8d0cd4ff
      Alexandru Gheorghe authored
      There is a problem in the way we update `authorithy-discovery` next keys
      and because of that nodes that enter the active set would be noticed at
      the start of the session they become active, instead of the start of the
      previous session as it was intended. This is problematic because:

      1. The node itself advertises its addresses on the DHT only when it
      notices it should become active on around ~10m loop, so in this case it
      would notice after it becomes active.
      2. The other nodes won't be able to detect the new nodes addresses at
      the beginning of the session, so it won't added them to the reserved
      set.

      With 1 + 2, we end-up in a situation where the the new node won't be
      able to properly connect to its peers because it won't be in its peers
      reserved set. Now, the nodes accept by default`MIN_GOSSIP_PEERS: usize =
      25` connections to nodes that are not in the reserved set, but given
      Kusama size(> 1000 nodes) you could easily have more than`25` new nodes
      entering the active set or simply the nodes don't have slots anymore
      because, they already have connections to peers not in the active set.

      In the end what the node would notice is 0 backing rewards because it
      wasn't directly connected to the peers in its backing group.

      ## Root-cause

      The flow is like this:
      1. At BAD_SESSION - 1, in `rotate_session` new nodes are added to
      QueuedKeys
      https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/02e1a7f4/substrate/frame/session/src/lib.rs#L609
      ```
       <QueuedKeys<T>>::put(queued_amalgamated.clone());
      <QueuedChanged<T>>::put(next_changed);
      ```
      2. AuthorityDiscovery::on_new_session is called with `changed` being the
      value of `<QueuedChanged<T>>:` at BAD_SESSION - **2** because it was
      saved before being updated
      https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/02e1a7f4/substrate/frame/session/src/lib.rs#L613
      3. At BAD_SESSION - 1, `AuthorityDiscovery::on_new_session` doesn't
      updated its next_keys because `changed` was false.
      4. For the entire durations of `BAD_SESSION - 1` everyone calling
      runtime api `authorities`(should return past, present and future
      authorities) won't discover the nodes that should become active .
      5. At the beginning of BAD_SESSION, all nodes discover the new nodes are
      authorities, but it is already too late because reserved_nodes are
      updated only at the beginning of the session by the `gossip-support`.
      See above why this bad.

      ## Fix
      Update next keys with the queued_validators at every session, not matter
      the value of `changed` this is the same way babe pallet correctly does
      it.
      https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/blob/02e1a7f4

      /substrate/frame/babe/src/lib.rs#L655

      ## Notes

      - The issue doesn't reproduce with proof-authorities changes like
      `versi` because `changed` would always be true and `AuthorityDiscovery`
      correctly updates its next_keys every time.
      - Confirmed at session `37651` on kusama that this is exactly what it
      happens by looking at blocks with polkadot.js.

      ## TODO
      - [ ] Move versi on proof of stake and properly test before and after
      fix to confirm there is no other issue.

      FRAME: Create `TransactionExtension` as a replacement for `SignedExtension` (#2280) · fd5f9292
      Gavin Wood authored

      Closes #2160

      First part of [Extrinsic
      Horizon](https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/issues/2415)

      Introduces a new trait `TransactionExtension` to replace
      `SignedExtension`. Introduce the idea of transactions which obey the
      runtime's extensions and have according Extension data (né Extra data)
      yet do not have hard-coded signatures.

      Deprecate the terminology of "Unsigned" when used for
      transactions/extrinsics owing to there now being "proper" unsigned
      transactions which obey the extension framework and "old-style" unsigned
      which do not. Instead we have __*General*__ for the former and
      __*Bare*__ for the latter. (Ultimately, the latter will be phased out as
      a type of transaction, and Bare will only be used for Inherents.)

      Types of extrinsic are now therefore:
      - Bare (no hardcoded signature, no Extra data; used to be known as
      "Unsigned")
      - Bare transactions (deprecated): Gossiped, validated with
      `ValidateUnsigned` (deprecated) and the `_bare_compat` bits of
      `TransactionExtension` (deprecated).
        - Inherents: Not gossiped, validated with `ProvideInherent`.
      - Extended (Extra data): Gossiped, validated via `TransactionExtension`.
        - Signed transactions (with a hardcoded signature).
        - General transactions (without a hardcoded signature).

      `TransactionExtension` differs from `SignedExtension` because:
      - A signature on the underlying transaction may validly not be present.
      - It may alter the origin during validation.
      - `pre_dispatch` is renamed to `prepare` and need not contain the checks
      present in `validate`.
      - `validate` and `prepare` is passed an `Origin` rather than a
      `AccountId`.
      - `validate` may pass arbitrary information into `prepare` via a new
      user-specifiable type `Val`.
      - `AdditionalSigned`/`additional_signed` is renamed to
      `Implicit`/`implicit`. It is encoded *for the entire transaction* and
      passed in to each extension as a new argument to `validate`. This
      facilitates the ability of extensions to acts as underlying crypto.

      There is a new `DispatchTransaction` trait which contains only default
      function impls and is impl'ed for any `TransactionExtension` impler. It
      provides several utility functions which reduce some of the tedium from
      using `TransactionExtension` (indeed, none of its regular functions
      should now need to be called directly).

      Three transaction version discriminator ("versions") are now
      permissible:
      - 0b000000100: Bare (used to be called "Unsigned"): contains Signature
      or Extra (extension data). After bare transactions are no longer
      supported, this will strictly identify an Inherents only.
      - 0b100000100: Old-school "Signed" Transaction: contains Signature and
      Extra (extension data).
      - 0b010000100: New-school "General" Transaction: contains Extra
      (extension data), but no Signature.

      For the New-school General Transaction, it becomes trivial for authors
      to publish extensions to the mechanism for authorizing an Origin, e.g.
      through new kinds of key-signing schemes, ZK proofs, pallet state,
      mutations over pre-authenticated origins or any combination of the
      above.

      ## Code Migration

      ### NOW: Getting it to build

      Wrap your `SignedExtension`s in `AsTransactionExtension`. This should be
      accompanied by renaming your aggregate type in line with the new
      terminology. E.g. Before:

      ```rust
      /// The SignedExtension to the basic transaction logic.
      pub type SignedExtra = (
      	/* snip */
      	MySpecialSignedExtension,
      );
      /// Unchecked extrinsic type as expected by this runtime.
      pub type UncheckedExtrinsic =
      	generic::UncheckedExtrinsic<Address, RuntimeCall, Signature, SignedExtra>;
      ```

      After:

      ```rust
      /// The extension to the basic transaction logic.
      pub type TxExtension = (
      	/* snip */
      	AsTransactionExtension<MySpecialSignedExtension>,
      );
      /// Unchecked extrinsic type as expected by this runtime.
      pub type UncheckedExtrinsic =
      	generic::UncheckedExtrinsic<Address, RuntimeCall, Signature, TxExtension>;
      ```

      You'll also need to alter any transaction building logic to add a
      `.into()` to make the conversion happen. E.g. Before:

      ```rust
      fn construct_extrinsic(
      		/* snip */
      ) -> UncheckedExtrinsic {
      	let extra: SignedExtra = (
      		/* snip */
      		MySpecialSignedExtension::new(/* snip */),
      	);
      	let payload = SignedPayload::new(call.clone(), extra.clone()).unwrap();
      	let signature = payload.using_encoded(|e| sender.sign(e));
      	UncheckedExtrinsic::new_signed(
      		/* snip */
      		Signature::Sr25519(signature),
      		extra,
      	)
      }
      ```

      After:

      ```rust
      fn construct_extrinsic(
      		/* snip */
      ) -> UncheckedExtrinsic {
      	let tx_ext: TxExtension = (
      		/* snip */
      		MySpecialSignedExtension::new(/* snip */).into(),
      	);
      	let payload = SignedPayload::new(call.clone(), tx_ext.clone()).unwrap();
      	let signature = payload.using_encoded(|e| sender.sign(e));
      	UncheckedExtrinsic::new_signed(
      		/* snip */
      		Signature::Sr25519(signature),
      		tx_ext,
      	)
      }
      ```

      ### SOON: Migrating to `TransactionExtension`

      Most `SignedExtension`s can be trivially converted to become a
      `TransactionExtension`. There are a few things to know.

      - Instead of a single trait like `SignedExtension`, you should now
      implement two traits individually: `TransactionExtensionBase` and
      `TransactionExtension`.
      - Weights are now a thing and must be provided via the new function `fn
      weight`.

      #### `TransactionExtensionBase`

      This trait takes care of anything which is not dependent on types
      specific to your runtime, most notably `Call`.

      - `AdditionalSigned`/`additional_signed` is renamed to
      `Implicit`/`implicit`.
      - Weight must be returned by implementing the `weight` function. If your
      extension is associated with a pallet, you'll probably want to do this
      via the pallet's existing benchmarking infrastructure.

      #### `TransactionExtension`

      Generally:
      - `pre_dispatch` is now `prepare` and you *should not reexecute the
      `validate` functionality in there*!
      - You don't get an account ID any more; you get an origin instead. If
      you need to presume an account ID, then you can use the trait function
      `AsSystemOriginSigner::as_system_origin_signer`.
      - You get an additional ticket, similar to `Pre`, called `Val`. This
      defines data which is passed from `validate` into `prepare`. This is
      important since you should not be duplicating logic from `validate` to
      `prepare`, you need a way of passing your working from the former into
      the latter. This is it.
      - This trait takes two type parameters: `Call` and `Context`. `Call` is
      the runtime call type which used to be an associated type; you can just
      move it to become a type parameter for your trait impl. `Context` is not
      currently used and you can safely implement over it as an unbounded
      type.
      - There's no `AccountId` associated type any more. Just remove it.

      Regarding `validate`:
      - You get three new parameters in `validate`; all can be ignored when
      migrating from `SignedExtension`.
      - `validate` returns a tuple on success; the second item in the tuple is
      the new ticket type `Self::Val` which gets passed in to `prepare`. If
      you use any information extracted during `validate` (off-chain and
      on-chain, non-mutating) in `prepare` (on-chain, mutating) then you can
      pass it through with this. For the tuple's last item, just return the
      `origin` argument.

      Regarding `prepare`:
      - This is renamed from `pre_dispatch`, but there is one change:
      - FUNCTIONALITY TO VALIDATE THE TRANSACTION NEED NOT BE DUPLICATED FROM
      `validate`!!
      - (This is different to `SignedExtension` which was required to run the
      same checks in `pre_dispatch` as in `validate`.)

      Regarding `post_dispatch`:
      - Since there are no unsigned transactions handled by
      `TransactionExtension`, `Pre` is always defined, so the first parameter
      is `Self::Pre` rather than `Option<Self::Pre>`.

      If you make use of `SignedExtension::validate_unsigned` or
      `SignedExtension::pre_dispatch_unsigned`, then:
      - Just use the regular versions of these functions instead.
      - Have your logic execute in the case that the `origin` is `None`.
      - Ensure your transaction creation logic creates a General Transaction
      rather than a Bare Transaction; this means having to include all
      `TransactionExtension`s' data.
      - `ValidateUnsigned` can still be used (for now) if you need to be able
      to construct transactions which contain none of the extension data,
      however these will be phased out in stage 2 of the Transactions Horizon,
      so you should consider moving to an extension-centric design.

      ## TODO

      Runtime Upgrade ref docs and Single Block Migration example pallet (#1554) · 12ce4f7d
      Liam Aharon authored
      Closes https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk-docs/issues/55

      - Changes 'current storage version' terminology to less ambiguous
      'in-code storage version' (suggestion by @ggwpez

      )
      - Adds a new example pallet `pallet-example-single-block-migrations`
      - Adds a new reference doc to replace
      https://docs.substrate.io/maintain/runtime-upgrades/ (temporarily living
      in the pallet while we wait for developer hub PR to merge)
      - Adds documentation for the `storage_alias` macro
      - Improves `trait Hooks` docs
      - Improves `trait GetStorageVersion` docs
      - Update the suggested patterns for using `VersionedMigration`, so that
      version unchecked migrations are never exported
      - Prevents accidental usage of version unchecked migrations in runtimes

      https://github.com/paritytech/substrate/pull/14421#discussion_r1255467895
      - Unversioned migration code is kept inside `mod version_unchecked`,
      versioned code is kept in `pub mod versioned`
      - It is necessary to use modules to limit visibility because the inner
      migration must be `pub`. See
      https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/30905 and

      https://internals.rust-lang.org/t/lang-team-minutes-private-in-public-rules/4504/40
      for more.

      ### todo

      - [x] move to reference docs to proper place within sdk-docs (now that
      https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk/pull/2102 is merged)
      - [x] prdoc

      [FRAME Core] remove unnecessary overrides while using derive_impl for frame_system (#3317) · b78c72cf
      Gilt0 authored

      # Description

      This PR removes redundant type definition from test definition config
      implementations like
      ```
      #[derive_impl(frame_system::config_preludes::TestDefaultConfig as frame_system::DefaultConfig)]
      impl frame_system::Config for Test {
          type A = A;
          ...
      }
      ```

      This changes avoid redundancies in the code as the macro `derive_impl`
      defines the relevant types. To implement the changes, it was a simple
      fact of running tests and making sure that the tests would still run
      while the definition would be removed.

      Closes #3237

      sp-std -> core (#3199) · bc2e5e1f
      Squirrel authored
      First in a series of PRs that reduces our use of sp-std with a view to
      deprecating it.

      This is just looking at /substrate and moving some of the references
      from `sp-std` to `core`.
      These particular changes should be uncontroversial.

      Where macros are used `::core` should be used to remove any ambiguity.

      Introduce Polkadot-Sdk `developer_hub` (#2102) · eaf1bc56
      Kian Paimani authored

      This PR introduces the new crate `developer_hub` into the polkadot-sdk
      repo. The vision for the developer-hub crate is detailed in [this
      document](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XLLkFNE8v8HLvZpI2rzsa8N2IN1FcKntc8q-Sc4xBAk/edit?usp=sharing).

      Other than adding the new crate, it also does the following:

      * Remove the `substrate` crate, as there is now a unique umbrella crate
      for multiple things in `developer_hub::polkadot_sdk`.
      * (backport candidate) A minor change to `frame-support` macros that
      allows `T::RuntimeOrigin` to also be acceptable as the origin type.
      * (backport candidate) A minor change to `frame-system` that allows us
      to deposit events at genesis because now the real genesis config is
      generated via wasm, and we can safely assume `cfg!(feature = "std")`
      means only testing. related to #62.
      * (backport candidate) Introduces a small `read_events_for_pallet` to
      `frame_system` for easier event reading in tests.
      * From https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk-docs/issues/31, it
      takes action on improving the `pallet::call` docs.
      * From https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot-sdk-docs/issues/31, it
      takes action on improving the `UncheckedExtrinsic` docs.

      ## Way Forward

      First, a version of this is deployed temporarily
      [here](https://blog.kianenigma.nl/polkadot-sdk/developer_hub/index.html).
      I will keep it up to date on a daily basis.

      ### This Pull Request

      I see two ways forward:

      1. We acknowledge that everything in `developer-hub` is going to be WIP,
      and merge this asap. We should not yet use links to this crate anywhere.
      2. We make this be the feature branch, make PRs against this, and either
      gradually backport it, or only merge to master once it is done.

      I am personally in favor of option 1. If we stick to option 2, we need a
      better way to deploy a staging version of this to gh-pages.

      frame: Enable GenesisConfig in no_std (#14108) · 613420a0
      Michal Kucharczyk authored
      * frame: Default for GenesisConfig in no_std

      `Default` for `GenesisConfig` will be required for no_std in no native
      runtime world. It must be possible to instantiate default GenesisConfig
      for pallets and runtime.

      * ".git/.scripts/commands/fmt/fmt.sh"

      * hash69 in no_std reverted

      * derive(DefaultNoBound) for GenesisConfig used when possible

      * treasury: derive(Default)

      * Cargo.lock update

      * genesis_config: compiler error improved

      When std feature is not enabled for pallet, the GenesisConfig will be
      defined, but serde::{Serialize,Deserialize} traits will not be
      implemented.

      The compiler error indicates the reason of latter errors.

      This is temporary and serde traits will be enabled with together with
      `serde` support in frame.

      Instead of using a `u64` to represent the key we now use an `Arc<[u8]>`. This arc is also stored in
      some extra `HashSet`. We store the key are in an extra `HashSet` to de-duplicate the keys accross
      different storage roots. When the latest key usage is dropped in the lru, we also remove the key
      from the `HashSet`.
